INTIMATE AND UNPLUGGED WITH GRACE DE LA HUNT

The last time we had someone famous perform at our home, it was Richard Stirton who sang at Paige’s 21st – and now he is the winner of The Voice SA and really famous! Once a month a bunch of us aged 50 something get together for CD Club where we discuss and share music. This month it was my turn to host and so I decided to do something completely different.

I was at The Bay a few weeks before and my friend Grace De La Hunt was singing. I love Grace’s work, she has the most amazing and unique voice and lists her genres of music as pop, country crossover, Motown and R and B. She performs fun pop melodies, both her own music and covers. I asked her if she would consider singing at our CD Club at my home. She didn’t hesitate and said she would love to.

It was a chilly evening so I had a hearty fire going in the lounge and before everyone arrived I had braaied a selection of German sausages for dinner. The guys arrived in “dribs and drabs” and I asked them to take a seat with their bottles of wine because I had a surprise for them.

Grace duly arrived with her guitar and sheets of notes. She immediately settled in and started the show with the well covered Amy Winehouse song, “Valerie”. She followed this up with a Bee Gees number, “You Don’t Know What It’s Like” and then some Fleetwood Mac – perfect for the 50 something crowd. In between songs she chatted to us and told us a few stories. Earlier this year Grace was the opening act for Mariah Carey and performed at the Cape Town Stadium – she describes the experience as “wild”. I am sure it was.

She sang a couple of Elvis Presley tracks – “Don’t Be Cruel” and “I Can’t Help falling in Love”. For me the best song of the evening was Radiohead’s “Creep”. Dark lyrics. She also did the more modern “Crazy”, by Gnarls Barclay, Rodrigues “I Wonder” and some Johnny Cash before doing a few of her own songs – “I Really Like You” and “Trouble”.

She asked us if we had any requests and the guys really seemed to enjoy her own music so Grace finished off her set with “King of the Castle”. What a wonderful evening we had. Grace joined us for a German sausage and a chat and then it was on to the business of CD’s.

Not only did Grace open for Mariah Carey but she also made the finals of SA’s Got Talent last year. She is a wonderful talent and a joy to watch. She is off to Europe for a month and we look forward to seeing her perform at Pastis, The Bay or a folk festival on her return.

Thanks for spoiling us Grace. You rock.
