We have seen Grace perform on a few occasions and each time she gets better and better. This time she was performing at the delightful little restaurant in Constantia – Pastis. Winter has not yet arrived, so we were able to sit outside where a fire kept us warm and blankets were available. Grace is a 21 year old up and coming singer songwriter.
Grace advertised this event as “I’ll be doing a few new covers and some of my own songs”. I absolutely love Grace’s voice. She started off with her own song called “I Really Like You” and then moved on to a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way”. Superb. She followed this up with Lana Del Ray’s “Video Games” and then “Betty Davis Eyes”.
One of the patrons on the night had brought her dog and each time we clapped, the dog also barked his approval! So funny!
One of the originals that she did was co written with her brother and called “Don’t Think Just Dance”, while another original was “King of the Castle”. Some more covers followed including Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars”, Elvis’s “Don’t Be Cruel” and Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain”.
It was a real mixed bag of songs and each one done in Grace’s unique way – they say it’s easy to do a cover similar to the original, it is another thing to do it completely your own way so that it sounds totally different, and this is what Grace does.
I love her stage presence – shy and naive – but care free. She had no idea how long she had played for, and kept playing for almost two hours.
She did “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”, “Walking on Sunshine”, Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and then for the encore “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse and her own “How Do You Know”.
Sharon and I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the food, as usual, was outstanding. Thanks Grace and Pastis for a great evening.
